WHAT IS CITiPULSE?
The CITiPULSE vision is to provide an interactive city engagement and emergency services hub which can easily be retrofitted to urban infrastructure. As a leading network maintenance contractor Downer recognised the need to develop smarter public transport and information access points whilst reducing street clutter. Teaming up with technology partners Nokia, Solta Labs and DesignBrand the companies have developed the CITiPULSE smart city solution.
CITiPULSE FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
- A smart touch screen interface with a customisable layout
- Mobile payment facility payWave e.g. for topping up transport cards
- Emergency services integration including a two way speaker and AED defibrillator
- Mobile services e.g. create a Wi-Fi hub or, hotspot, node for mesh network, or supporting small cell sites
USER INTERFACE
The user interface has been designed into three main components, transport information, map/way finding and micro app, and administration functions in the footer. Interface options can include:
- Public Transportation (PT) information including bus/rail numbers with estimated time of arrival to the nearest stops.
- An interactive city map. Users can plan their journey through a variety of transport options and search for places of interest.
- Within the map a journey planner is available with an array of transport options and times. Users are able to choose from a list of ‘things to do’ from a drop down list on the map. Items include dining, shopping, activities, attractions and arts and culture.
- Upon touch the tiles (micro apps) expand to enable a user to interact with the tile/app.
- A weather application which has up-to-date local information. This can include a real-time feed from the environmental sensors within the CITiPULSE unit.
- A tile featuring real-time CCTV footage of the person using CITiPULSE is picked up through a covert security camera.
- A ‘what’s happening’ tile displaying city events information e.g. Eventfinda.
- Payment services for smart parking, transport card top up or prepaid mobile top up.
- CityOn social feed from citizens who are out and about reporting on their city.
- Assistance buttons – emergency and accessibility modes. In accessibility mode the interface panels lower to allow access for wheelchair users.
- When the emergency tile is touched emergency services will be contacted and the defibrillator released.
AED DEFIBRILLATOR
There is growing concern that our cities have a lack of accessible defibrillators. Within CITIPULSE a defibrillator can be accessed via the emergency tile on the user interface. In an emergency a user should touch the emergency tile to contact emergency services and then emergency services can remotely trigger the release of the defibrillator and provide support via the two-way speaker.

ENVIRONMENTAL SENSING
CITiPULSE has incorporated environmental sensors that test ambient air quality for Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Ozone (O3) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2). The sensors provide up-to-date data which can be displayed on the user interface or stored in the cloud for real-time data analysis.
SMART CITY IOT HUB
Inside CITiPULSE is an IoT network switch and provision for the backhaul of city sensing technology, whether it be, SigFox, LoRa. ZigBee etc. The idea is that CITiPULSE can be located near assets to minimise costs and simplify the management of smart city sensing.
