User Interface
The main interactive components in CITiPULSE include the touch screen, the user interface and payment services.
CITiPULSE uses Samsung’s new 37″ ultra wide stretched outdoor highbright screen. It has a stretched resolution of 1920×540, narrow bezel and no-glare panel which reduces haze by 44%. The stretched screen provides users with enough real estate to interact while allowing the asset operator to also surface public transport information and potentially advertising. The applications and interface are fully customisable and can be adjusted to meet the needs of each client.
The CITiPULSE glass facier is a low iron float glass with anti-reflective coating on both surfaces. The glass is hardened to mitigate the impact from vandalism. This glass offers the best possible user experience through the capacitive touch interface.
For use in a public space like on a streetlight pole the team needed to carefully consider the impact of vandalism and the environment to ensure any possible damage would be mitigated. From the lessons learnt during the Smart Bus Shelter project the team knew the glass needed to cover the complete area of the CITiPULSE front surface.
To create an interactive hub we opted to use capacitive touch technology. Within the overlay is an electrostatic grid of wires. These wires are extremely fine and can only be seen if you hold the foil at a particular angle on the light. Capacitive touch works by using the body’s conductive properties to identify the location of the touch – essentially the user connects up the wires. The CITiPULSE unit is basically an enormous outdoor rated smart phone!
